Sandwich launched by demonstrator reportedly burst and left condiment mark on border agent, court hears

Law enforcement interacting with people on city street
A person, eventually detained for supposedly striking law enforcement with a sandwich, engages with customs and FBI agents.

A federal customs official has stated under oath he could detect through his body armor the force of a sandwich launched at him by a DC demonstrator, who has faced court proceedings for physical attack.

Federal border agent Gregory Lairmore testified to the legal jury the food item "shattered all over him" and he "noticed the vegetables and condiment" on his official attire.

Neither side contests that the accused, 37, did in fact throw vulgar language and a made-to-order snack at law enforcement sent by the former president to secure the Washington DC in the summer month.

The event was captured on camera and became popular online, making the accused a figure of opposition in Washington DC to Trump.

State lawyers at first tried to achieve major offense allegations against the defendant, but a legal panel refused to prosecute him.

Trump's assignment of National Guard troops to Washington DC this summer caused anger from some of the local inhabitants, who saw it as a partisan deployment of the armed forces.

According to legal filings, the accused came near a group of officers at about 23:00 on the summer date, describing them "fascists" and shouting: "Why are you here? I don't want you in my city!"

The court saw a demonstration from Mr Lairmore on the court date as he gave evidence against Mr Dunn.

"I sensed it through my protective gear," he said of the food's collision, mentioning that an vegetable piece hung from his communication device and mustard stained his shirt.

Mr Dunn's attorney, his legal representative, said in her initial argument that hurling the food item was a "innocent action that did not, could not, result in harm".

But state lawyer the state's representative argued the defendant must be held accountable.

"Regardless of identity, you can't just go around throwing stuff at people because you're mad," the attorney said.

Following the reported incident came to light, Mr Dunn was dismissed from his position as a paralegal in the federal legal agency.
